Does your child have Autism, ADHD or Social Anxiety?
Life Skills Prep Camp is the only Summer Camp in the Sarasota-Manatee area that offers children, ages 5-14, the chance to learn how to socialize and find activities that make them feel good. Campers learn important social and life skills in a supportive environment.
Our activities are taught by experienced instructors and include:
line dancing, art, cooking, team building, and believe it or not, exercise - including running and yoga!
Life Skills Prep Camp gives ALL Children an opportunity to experience a variety of recreational activities and to explore what resonates with them. Many of the activities at the camp may not have been considered as an option by a family but since it is presented in a supported environment and everyone else is doing it, campers are more likely to participate and get a lot more out of the experience.
There are no prerequisite skills necessary for any of the sessions as all are adapted for the level of camper we have as Life Skills Prep Camp is an inclusive summer camp environment. We host students that are typically developing as well as students with physical disabilities, ADHD, and high functioning Autism/Asperger’s.
Helping students/children see another perspective can be HUGE. At Life Skills Prep Camp, we work diligently to understand students and how they think (especially about a specific situation) and help them understand the point of view of others involved in the situation. Never with the idea of changing the student but with the idea of allowing them to understand what is going on around them from another perspective which allows them to begin to understand how and why other people react the way they do.
All of this while applying FUNctional executive functioning strategies and instruction throughout the day that promotes appropriate communication and problem solving. If you think about Dancing, it requires a person to be aware of their body in space (proprioception – OT term), remember the steps of the different dances (executive functioning), process the rhythm and beat, as well as, count and move on said beats (all of which are executive functioning skills).
When we are working with students throughout the school year in a 1 on 1 situation, those students can give the appropriate answer but taking the information in an isolated office situation and applying it in a social setting or at school can be very challenging for children.
Creating the Life Skills Prep Camp - Summer Camp gave us (the professionals) a platform for showing the students when to use the strategies they’ve been taught in a safe, supported environment.
Come join us at Life Skills Prep Camp for a summer of fun!
